Exploring heritage, embracing innovation and mindful transformation

Anita Martinelli is a PhD candidate in Urban Planning, Design, and Policy at the Politecnico di Milano within the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU). Trained as an architect, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from IUAV University of Venice, including an Erasmus exchange at ETSAM (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid), and a Master’s degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Politecnico di Milano. Her Master’s thesis investigated the Appian Park in Rome, analyzing its multiscalar relationships within the urban fabric and territorial landscape.

Her doctoral research explores contemporary transnational projects in heritage-rich urban contexts, with a strong focus on digital tools to enhance the representation, interpretation, and management of these dynamic processes. In particular, she examines UNESCO World Heritage Sites, developing innovative strategies to integrate cultural heritage with urban development.

She has also been a Teaching Assistant at Politecnico di Milano, supporting courses in urban design and innovation. As a Visiting Researcher at IRTIC – University of Valencia, she further expanded her expertise by investigating digital innovation in cultural heritage. Actively engaged in academic discourse, she contributes to conferences and interdisciplinary projects.
