Unveiling the rhetoric of scientism, pursuing epistemic plurality in planning studies

Ruggero Signoroni, urbanist, studied urban planning at Politecnico di Milano, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2019 and successfully completed his master studies in 2021. Currently, he’s a PhD candidate at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU), Politecnico di Milano. His doctoral thesis dives into the return of scientism in planning and, by inquiring the rise of the so-called ‘new urban science’, challenges the modes of scientization of urban governance pursued through datafication and technological solutionism. As part of his doctoral studies, he has been conducting empirical research abroad – in Sweden, at Lund University, and in Germany, at TU Berlin. Key findings from the fieldwork, focused on the activities of the Senseable Stockholm Lab, has been discussed at symposiums and research seminars in Italy and abroad. Further research interests, to which he has dedicated publications on Italian and international scientific journals, include urban planning history, planning theories, planning decision-making, policy analysis, participatory planning, and hybrid modes of civic engagement.

Alongside his research activities, he has been serving as Teaching Assistant at Politecnico di Milano since Academic Year 2021/2022. Notably, between 2022 and 2024 he tutored in the didactic modules of Urban Planning (BSc of Architectural Design) and Conflicts Management and Resolution (MSc of Urban Planning and Policy Design).
