Seeing conflict, imagining urban justice
Giulia Oldani is a PhD candidate researching the role of university campuses as urban actors capable of transforming and shaping the urban environment. Her work, part of Italy’s Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR), focuses on developing an evaluation framework to assess the social and territorial impacts of universities, as well as potential conflicts arising from their presence in urban neighborhoods.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in urban planning from the Politecnico di Milano, where her thesis explored the integration of prison infrastructure with city life. During a double-degree program with Tongji University in Shanghai, she earned a master’s degree in urban planning from Polimi and an Engineering Master’s in Town and Regional Planning from Tongji. Her theses addressed inclusive public space design for women and people with disabilities (Tongji) and the evolving temporariness of refugee camps (Polimi).
She is the founder of Urbinary.
Giulia’s research interests include the impact of violence, conflict, and war on urban spaces (urbicide), with a focus on Middle Eastern dynamics, particularly the colonization of Palestine. She explores how these processes reshape cities’ spatial, social, and political fabrics, aiming to contribute to meaningful dialogues and a deeper understanding of these issues.
